Worm eggs or larvae of worms are found everywhere in the surroundings, making it possible for dogs to become infected at all times. Veterinarians therefore recommend that a dog or puppy be wormed regularly. Worming should start before the birth of a puppy. It is in fact possible to get infected in the womb with roundworm larvae. In addition to infection in the womb, puppies can also become infected through the mothermilk with roundworm larvae. At a later age, dogs can still become infected with worm infections from the environment, including roundworms, tapeworms, whipworms, hookworms, lungworms and (French) heartworms.
Why deworm your dog?
It is important to deworm your dog regularly. Not only are worms harmful to the health of pets, but some worm infections can also be transmitted to humans. Humans can get infected by bobbin worms and tapeworms and get disease symptoms. We can get an infection by working in the garden, cleaning the litter box or by contamination through the sandbox.
Symptoms of a worminfection in the dog:
Diarrhea (with blood)
Gut blockage
Vomiting
Weight loss
Dull coat
Itching around the anus
Anemia
Growth backlog
Depending especially on the age of the dog, the severity of the infection and the type of worm different symptoms can appear. When in doubt, it is always good to consult a veterinarian. The worm infection often proceeds without clinical symptoms in adult dogs.
How often to deworm your dog?
Since worm eggs or larvae always occur in the environment of your dog, it is important to worm adult dogs four times a year. Despite the fact that a worm infection can go without symptoms in dogs, it is still important to deworm regularly. A dog that is infected with worms can infect the environment, other animals or its owner.
The deworming schedule of puppies is an exception, since they can get infected before birth. First of all it is important that the breeder has treated the bitch well against worms. When the puppies are two weeks old they must be dewormed for the first time, then this must be repeated every two weeks until they are twelve weeks old. The puppies must then be dewormed every month up to the age of six months. After this, dogs must be dewormed every three months.
